HVLA Opposes Secretary Hegseth’s Removal of Four Officers from the Brigadier General List

The Hispanic Veterans Leadership Alliance (HVLA) opposes Secretary Hegseth’s reported unilateral removal of two Black officers and two women from the Brigadier General promotion list, who were selected through a merit-based process proven, though imperfect, to identify qualified leaders. This unprecedented action sends a damaging signal about the integrity of leadership pathways and risks undermining confidence in promotion systems. Military readiness depends not only on capability, but also on institutional legitimacy and leadership credibility. All men and women of the armed forces must know that there is a clear pathway for career advancement, no matter one’s race, gender, or ethnicity. Actions that sidestep merit-based processes risk eroding trust and weakening morale.

HVLA calls on the Secretary to restore the integrity of the promotion process by reinstating these officers to the Brigadier General promotion list. We also urge Congress to exercise its oversight authority to ensure that promotion systems remain merit-based, transparent, and aligned with the readiness needs of the force.
